First Aid Roles, Responsibilities & Scene Assessment
Understand the core responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
Conduct a comprehensive scene assessment and prioritise actions based on clinical needs
Communicate clearly and effectively with children, infants, and caregivers
Execute the primary and secondary assessments (DR ABC) to evaluate the casualty's condition
Adhere to first aid principles and best practises during emergency care
Maintain accurate incident records, and adhere to report protocols
Safely manage medication administration in emergency situations
Prevent and manage cross-contamination to ensure infection control
Paediatric CPR, AED Use & Recovery Positioning
Administer CPR for infants and children, with practical experience using mannequins
Safely operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for paediatric casualties)
Recognise critical moments to initiate and cease CPR based on the child's response
Correctly position infants and children in the recovery position and monitor respiratory function
Gain a comprehensive understanding of paediatric resuscitation techniques and their nuances
Airway Management, Seizures & Acute Medical Emergencies
Identify and manage airway obstruction (partial and complete) in children and infants
Practise the choking response using mannequins or choking vests for hands-on experience
Recognise and respond to different types of seizures (absence, focal, febrile, and generalised)
Provide appropriate post-seizure care to ensure safety and recovery
Identify and manage acute medical conditions, i.e. epilepsy, anaphylaxis, auto-injector awareness, asthma and diabetes management, meningitis, sepsis, sickle cell anaemia, croup and febrile convulsions


Trauma & Wound Care Management
Provide first aid for minor injuries, such as cuts, grazes, bruises, burns, and splinters
Effectively control bleeding
Recognise and manage shock and other life-threatening injuries (e.g. amputations, internal injuries)
Identify and treat unconsciousness and its underlying causes
Assess and manage fractures, ensuring proper immobilisation and care
Treat burns and scalds with appropriate first aid techniques
Provide care for eye and ear injuries with specific first aid protocols
Recognise and respond to poisoning through ingestion, inhalation, or dermal exposure
Address head injuries including concussion and skull fractures
Manage hypothermia and heat-related illnesses (e.g. heat exhaustion and heat stroke)


Regulatory Compliance & First Aid Kit Management
Ensure proper maintenance and management of first aid kits
Follow legal requirements for recording and reporting all incidents and treatments
Comply with national and local regulations regarding first aid care and response
Implement infection control practises to maintain a sterile environment during first aid provision
